Phone Scam: DC Marketing
It's not often we go serious here at 4wm, but when we do there is a bloody good reason for doing so - much like this.
If your from Australia, and have received a missed call on your mobile phones for the phone numbers, (03) 9540 5101 or (03) 8558 1443, (03) 8558 1442, (03) 8558 1444, (02) 8303 8320 ,(03) 8558 1445….and the list keeps going on and on - the keep reading.
How the scam works:
- You receive a missed call from one of the above phone numbers - the call is so quick you don't even get a chance to answer it, before the call ends.
- If you ring the number back, you receive an a voice recording informing you that you have one a prize of $40 worth of ringtones (or something similar) and are directed to call yet another number to claim your prize
To make matters worse, the only clear why they are contacting hundreds of people is through random number dialing (which is illigal in Australia) - proving this is the case however isn't easy.
Whirlpool Australia is leading the charge to take action against the company DC Marketing who is behind the scam.

Let me know if you find any more numbers to add to the list.
Forgot to link to the Whirlpool thread in my post, must change that.

No worries mate, thanks for the comment

…I just got a new number a week ago… As random dialing is hard to prove, could this be a connection????
February 7th, 2006 at 9:24 am -
I’m not too sure Netvista, I’d probably follow this up with your phone carrier service.
You have been receiving these and you just got a new phone?
Wow.
February 7th, 2006 at 1:55 pm -
[...] A lot has happened since the initial post we made regarding DC Marketing a couple of weeks ago. [...]
February 7th, 2006 at 2:00 pm -
@ Netvista - That is what is making so many people worried about this, many people have just brought the phone and are receiving the phone calls. Something dosn’t add up here.
When you stop using a phone number, or your plan expires etc - the phone number goes into a 3month holding period, where all traces of it should be removed from anything….
Things just dont add up..
February 8th, 2006 at 5:11 pm -
Well this doesn’t make sense because a collegue of mine from work has had his number for over a year and never been late on his bill… but he has had a call from this…. Weird.
February 9th, 2006 at 11:47 am -
I got a missed call from one on the list on 28 January and never bothered to call back. I just decided to randomly google it today and found this list.
Thanks for the info.
I’ve had the same number for a couple of years.February 9th, 2006 at 10:55 pm -
Just received a call from that number and I googled it. Seems they are still hard at it. Mine was at 11.25am.
April 6th, 2006 at 11:26 am -
I also googled the number just to see what I’d get. The call was at 07:15am. Also these companies just dial every available number. If it rings, it’s added to the database to be rung again. Eventually, everyone will be on the list.
Just for those who don’t know, most mobile numbers are being recycled. If you get a ‘new’ number, the previous user may have subscribed to those ring-tone like companies or added their details to a call list. It’s probably why they changed their number. Reactivating the number reactivates the subscription. Try and make sure your ‘new’ number has never been used before you activate it. Your carrier should be able to answer that question.

I got a phone call from 0395405189 I stupidly called it back but hanged up as soon as I heard a woman talking like she was selling something.
my number is: 0432 564 XXX
May 4th, 2006 at 12:43 pm -
Lucky I checked here also….I have two phones and the same number went off within minutes of each other so I thought something was up.
The numbers are only 6008 6022 so they are not far apart…now that sure sounds like auto dialling to me.
Hope this can be stopped in the futre…..its just a pure scam.May 5th, 2006 at 9:43 am -
Hi Jon Novak,
Thanks for your post - I had a missed call and was googling it to see if I could get an idea of who it was from (didn’t think it would be something like this though!). The 1st hit was your message. Same number 03 8102 9565, 8:13am Saturday.
Thanks for the heads up.

Ring ACCC, they are taking action against them. The more complains the quicker they will get action done. They know all about it so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel explaining it to them.
May 10th, 2006 at 2:19 pm -
Thanks, just received a call from these guys. I’ll be ringing the ACCC very shortly.

I just had the very same thing, a missed call from a number in Victoria even though I’m in NSW and only know my cousins in Vic, I didn’t know their home number so decided to check the number (03 81029565) in the white pages against my cousins name and it wasn’t them so I thought I’d try to find an areacode and Googled it to find the actual number on thsi website! Thankfully we are mostly all smart enough to do this before ringing, how great is the Net!
May 25th, 2006 at 8:21 pm -
I have also received a few of these so far, all from numbers already listed here
I’m glad i googled it and found this page, is there anything we can do to stop this?
May 28th, 2006 at 3:56 am -
I got a missed call on my mobile last week as well as just now. The numbers are (03)9540 5187 and (03)8102 9565, which are among those numbers listed here. Lucky I googled and find this page before I call back.
I have owned this mobile number for 4 years, even before the ring tone came out. So I guess this bloody company is just calling randomly. Too naughty! Hope it gets cracked down soon!May 28th, 2006 at 3:32 pm -
Go get these scumbags! - I love a great cause - I suggest get on the front foot & make sure EVERYONE knows that DC-MARKETING are lying theives and phone scam operators!
oh, yeah I got a call from 03 81029565
I thought maybe a DC-Marketing scam website would be a great place to start.

Keep up the good work, I watch with interest!

Hey i got a call a while ago from 03 8102 9565 and didn’t know the number or any simila so i assumed it was a wrong number. i only just thought of googling the number after hearing about it happenong to friends who called it back. i recieved the call on 24/04/06 (monday) at 11:54am. hope this is somehow useful in stopping them.
May 30th, 2006 at 8:04 pm -
02 8404 2236
I also watch with interest and hope someone finds a way of ripping the mat out from under these devious money grubbing wankers.
The problem is alot of mobile phone owners arent internet savvy and wouldnt think of “googling” an alien phone number.
Dont just sit at your desk and whine, tell your friends and the storekeepers and anyone else who owns a mobile phone that will listen. The only education in this instance is word of mouth so make yours HUGE.

June 11th, 2006 at 12:00 pm -
I got one from 02 8404 2215 at 09:05 12 june. I rang it back unfortunately. However when they call me again I will add their sales and management department emails to a pornographic news group or 50. Then they will know about SPAM. Aanyone else want to do it, the gen is:
Get a news reader like agent, and use the odffending parties email address as your own reply to.
send a single submission listing the offending emails to newsgroups of your choice. Don’t cross post too many as some can you for doing it. Usually about 10 is enough. Then do another and keep going until your hands are tired. In the body of the email, just put in all the email addresses in question. Don’t need to write anything. The best email to begin with is johnsalazar@dcmarketing.com, but its a fair bet postmaster@dcmarketing.com, sales@ admin@ and info@ are also good bets.
If everyone does this we automate the spamming against them which seems to be what they want.
http://www.dcmarketing.com/contact.htm has all you need for contact details, but note info@dcmarketing is a hide for johnsalazar@dcmarketing.com.

This is a Very interesting site - I got a one ring call from one of these numbers (03-81029565) on 16 May at 2:46 just a couple of hours after picking up my new Three phone. They knew my number before anyone else! We can all do without spam phone calls.

I just got an email from a Hutchison person who runs the ‘3′ network who just got one and warned everyone in the company not to call these numbers back. I received one of these on Thu 08-Jun-2006 at 11:17pm. It seems these people (or computer) works all hours.

I got a call from 0284042296 on Saturday morning and called them back. Bummer
I figured I’d just missed it because my phone was on silent. My provider is Virgin. I’ll be in touch with them about it in the next couple hours.June 13th, 2006 at 1:28 pm -
I expect to get junk in the mail, i expect spam when i open my email but for christ sake would they just give us all a bloody break. You can’t do anything these days without people wanting to make a buck off you. I received a missed call from (02) 8404 2215, the same as kate, same day and time and not realising I went to call it back before thank the lord I got interrupted by someone and hung up. Admittedly I don’t know anyone who has an 84 phone number but how am I to know it’s not one of my friends calling me from a hotel on their holidays??? And what about young kids with mobiles?? I’m sure their parents would be really impressed when they got a bloody huge phone bill.
Sorry that was my rant. Feel much better now.
June 13th, 2006 at 2:00 pm -
Just called the department of Fair trading in NSW and if anyone has received one of these calls outside the hours of 9am and 8pm then you should go to the website fill in the details and log a complaint. What they are doing, if it is not random dialling is completely legal and we can’t do a bloody thing unless we can catch them calling people outside of the designated hours.

I just recieved an email from my friend describing this phone scam, and when I read the numbers listed i realised I have had 2 prank calls, the numbers were 0381029565 and 0284042296, and I got both of these calls within a week of eachother. i didnt call them back, as I dont pick up or call back numbers I dont know. My boyfriend called the number off his phone, but said he got a recording saying ‘this service wont permit the call to be made’ or something, so does this mean our bills wont be affected?
We are both on three, and I’ve only had my phone for around 2 months, and my boyfriends phone and number is new also. Im so glad I found this site! I also thought maybe it was a friend calling from interstate or whilst on holiday!
Thanks for the heads up guys, great work!
June 14th, 2006 at 3:06 pm -
I have a question about returning the missed calls. I received a missed call from 0284042242 at 19:41 5 June 2006. I called back, but I hung up as soon as I realized it was a scam (3 seconds maybe?).
Two emails have gone around my workplace today to warn us about this scam. These emails state that people who call the missed call number will be charged $100 (email number 1) or $50 (email number 2). Hoax emails following the scam?
C.
June 14th, 2006 at 5:26 pm -
I got one at 6:45pm today - 14/06/06. It was from 02 8972 5000. Since this looked like a switchboard number I decided not to call it back… something drew me to check who it was using at first an exchange locator - to find it wasnt on Telstra Exchange (according to Whirlpool) and then I deicded to Google it. Now it would appear my paranoia was justified!
Might see what I can find out about it tomorrow and blast it with our 16 x E1s
June 14th, 2006 at 10:53 pm -
I got an email from my sister about this yesterday and had a good read of your website. I have had my number since 2001 and never used my phone to subscribe to anything other than optuszoo. I couldn’t believe the timing of it when I got a call from 02 8404 2236 at 8:03am. I knew not to call it back thanks to you guys and my sister for spreading the word. I remember reading somewhere on your website that it was illegal for them to call outside of the hours of 9am and 8pm. If they claim they aren’t doing anything dodgy, then what was that all about?
I have a strong belief that if you pay for something such as monthly access to a mobile phone, a home phone or pay tv etc, you shouldn’t be hounded with advertisers. I would much prefer to simply look you up in a phone book if I ever needed your services. DC marketing has a new enemy! So long suckers!!!
June 15th, 2006 at 8:38 am -
The phone carriers are able to stop this within minutes.
They haven’t because this practice makes them plenty of money in calls.
Apply pressure to the ACCC to apply pressure to your carrier.June 15th, 2006 at 2:42 pm -
Have posted these numbers through work,
as i recieved a missed call from (03) 8102 9565,
I’m with the 3G Carrier. so I’m not sure why they would have my number. Because I believe i have my number unlisted.June 15th, 2006 at 4:10 pm -
got hit 2 days ago before i got the email. wise after the fact, mongrels
June 15th, 2006 at 6:37 pm -
I’ve just written a complaint up on the ACCC website, as I’ve bene hit twice since Feb06 by these pricks.
I actually called them back the first time, before getting thoroughly pi55ed and trying to contact them myself (they wouldn’t like me when I’m angry…).‘Decided pretty quickly that I was wasting my time as a consumer doing this alone, but I LOVE the fact you guys ain’t letting them bully you.

I saw an article about this on theage and recalled a missed call I received a while back and had contemplated returning.
So I checked my call history and there it was 03 8102 9565 1st June 6:09pm.
I hope you guys manage to stop them.

My partner and i received missed calls on the same night from the number 0284042242 on each of our mobiles. The phones must have only rung for a second because we did not realise we had missed calls until the following morning. My husband called it back from his phone - listened for 2 secs then hung up and told me it was a scam. Will he be charged $50-$100 as some people are saying in the posts above?

i got hit last night at 5:16 pm, unfortunatlky i was expecting a call from optus, ad knew they’d been having trouble gettig through to me (dodgy reception area) so called them back from my parrents home phone, received an email today from an old scholl friend, warning me of this scam, thought to call her before checking the email, for fear of viruses, wish i’d been so careful with calling the number back. hung up as soon as i realised it was a scam, but it may have been too late. called my father at work and gave mhima heads up, turns out he’s had two missed calls of the same nature. the numberi was called from was 0284042236, i’ve had the same optus prepaid number for 5 yrs, however have just changed over to a cap plan, could be related, could be random.
June 16th, 2006 at 3:06 pm -
Someone at work just sent out an email with the original list of numbers and straight away 4 people found a missed call on their phones from 1-2 months ago. I got a call off (02) 8404 2235. Thank god I’m lazy!
June 16th, 2006 at 3:29 pm -
Got a call from the 0284042296 number 6 days ago. Didn’t call back luckily.
June 16th, 2006 at 5:27 pm -
Reply to Scott’s question “How do you Google a number, and what information will it gove you ??
You just put the number into Google (australia) 8404 2207- and whammo you see (by chance admittedley) that is a scam number from this site via the blogs or possibly connect it to a business etc.. Pot luck and the 1st time I have done this…Just had an inkling the number was dodgy.
June 16th, 2006 at 9:58 pm -
I received a call from 02 8404 2236 on 10/6/06 at 9:18pm - looked a bit dodgy so I googled it - lucky you guys have something like this going - you sure saved me, thanks! PS I’m in Queensland!
June 16th, 2006 at 10:17 pm -
After getting a few of these calls on my mobile, I got one of these messages on my home phone! I answered and got an automated message “Hi. (long pause between each word). This is Stacey. You have won a prize, for more details please call…”
I hung up at that moment!
I mentioned this on another forum and someone else got the same call on their home number!
June 19th, 2006 at 10:24 am -
These cranks kept phoning me too so I reported them as nucience calls to the phone company.
June 19th, 2006 at 3:18 pm -
Wish I’d known about you guys earlier…
…I’m not looking forward to my next phone bill, let’s put it that way. The bastards tried me twice, and got me the second time. They got my fiancee too.
Does anyone know of legal precedent or process for appealing the cost of the call?
I read in an email containing the link to this page that the call cost is ridiculously high. Anyone with information please email me ASAP! brett.smith9@defence.gov.au
Thanks,
Brett.

TELEPHONE INFORMATION SERVICES STANDARDS COUNCIL
complaint & Response
I made a complaint to TISSC about DC Marketing and 1900 968 946. Here is the response
****************************************************************
” 15th June 2006I am writing in response to your complaint lodged with TISSC about the marketing of the above service.
TISSC is a self regulatory body established by the premium rate services industry to deal with complaints about the message content and advertising of 190 telephone services. We are not part of Telstra.
As Arbitrator, I am responsible for making sure that 190 services comply with our Code of Practice. When I find a service to be in breach of the Code, I am able to request that the service be corrected by the Service Provider, and recommend a refund where appropriate. The method of marketing the service by prank call to mobile numbers is not an issue that is covered by the TISSC Code of Practice. I have been in discussion with the Australian Communications and Media Authority(ACMA) to ascertain whether it considers this practice could be an issue under the Commonwealth Spam Act, and ACMA has advised me that it does not believe this marketing practice is prohibited by the Act.
TISSC has investigated the advertisement for this service on the local numbers left in missed call register on mobile telephones. There are some issues with the content of the voice recording advertising the service on the local numbers that I have taken up with the 190 service provider responsible for the 1900 968 946 number. I have also taken up an issue with the same service provider about information omitted from the recorded voice service accessed via 1900 968 946.
Unfortunately, as the use of the missed call devise for marketing this service is not covered by the TISSC Code of Practice, I am unable to assist you further with complaint. Thank you for drawing this matter to TISSC’s attention, as feedback such as you have provided alerts us to potential issues under the Code of Practice, and helps assist this office in ensuring that the 190 industry provides a fair product to consumers. Please be assured that we will be conducting ongoing monitoring of the advertising of the service on the local number, and message content on 1900 968 946 to ensure that it does not breach the standards of the TISSC Code.
If you experience any further difficulties with 190 services in the future, please do no hesitate to call this office on 1300 139 955.Yours Sincerely
signed
Una Lawrence
ARBITRATOR”
****************************************************************
At least we are starting to get somewhere. Implied in this was that the recorded message previously breached the Code of Practice. This could potentially enable a refund for those that have called the 1900 968 946.Hope this helps

The same day I found out about this I recived a call on 0284042293. Bastards!
June 20th, 2006 at 4:33 pm -
I just got a call from 0284042236, is this thing gonna get stopped?
June 20th, 2006 at 10:56 pm -
My wife and I have consecutive phone no.s and both of us recieved the prank call on the same day at about the same time. Unfortunately my wife did return the call and promptly hung up.
My question is are you charged $100 for ringing the (02,03) or for ringing the no. on the recorded message?
Only wish I had heard about this before.
Thanks.June 21st, 2006 at 6:03 am -
Hi
I havent been gotten as I use voda prepay CAPPED.. ie 49,79 or 149. If any other amount I can call 1900 numbers.I tried a few of the numbers and a LOT I couldnt get so they are charging.. they are NORMAL numbers ie the 02 and 03 numbers. others I could get and they asked to ring 1900 number so some are at least ethical if not fair.
So my advice it to get your phones barred from calling 1900 services somehow
Hope this helps

Why, with all the technology out there and porting numbers to different carriers, can’t these numbers be banned / blocked, something ??? And, why isn’t there any intervention from any Telecommunication Ombudsman ???
YOU GUYS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES PREYING ON INNOCENT, VULNERABLE PEOPLE - ISN’T THERE ENOUGH OF THIS CRAP ON UPLATE GAMESHOWS & CHAT LINES ??? COME ON ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, LET PEOPLE LIVE, ENJOY THE MONEY THEY WORK HARD FOR & STOP SCAMMING !!
June 21st, 2006 at 12:59 pm -
Another number: 02 84042289 (not verified because I did not return the call, but it is vey similar to one already in the list 84042298, only the sequence of the last two digits are different.)
I received a call from this number on my mobile phone at 14:15 on 21 June 2006. It rang for just a split second, just enough time to leave the number on your missed call list but not enough time for you to press the answer button.
My wife and her sister also received calls from numbers in the list. I bought the Vodafone numbers for them several months ago but they hardly ever use them except to answer my calls. No idea how the DC Marketing scums could have got our three mobile phone numbers. We did not give our phone numbers to porn sites or nightclubs etc., we have never set our foot in those kind of establishments.
June 21st, 2006 at 5:45 pm -
This is unreal, how do these scumbags get away with this. I recieved a ‘prank’ from 0284042289 and as you do - I called it back to see who it was. I lasted about a second before I promptly hung up. I then spoke to someone at work and was made aware of this scam. I would love to get my hands on a scumbag like this. What is this world coming to, if people are aloud to rip people off like this! Is there any way of catching these scumbags???
June 21st, 2006 at 6:33 pm -
I got one from 02-84042215 last night whilst I was sitting here at my computer…fortunately our IT guys had given us the list of nos…checked and it was on it…then I checked all our other phines…wifes had 2 different nos on it (fortunately she has enough trouble answering it, let alone anything else…) both were on diferent days. My daughters had 2 on theirs, but they dont reply unless they know the number(opinion is ‘if they want me thay will call me back).
Definately have to be using a random dialer in my opinion…Also cant wait for the ‘do not call list’ although how effective it will be remains to be seen.

Received call from 03 81029563 at 11.06PM on 21/06/06, my no. starts with 0411 (B Digital), although on Optus network, had number for 9 years.

It was only when i got my bill when i realised how much the call cost. I hung up instanty when i heard the pre recorded voice on the other end. Thanks for providing this site

The mongrels got me yesterday after the rally. It is a very similar number to a company we deal with in Melbourne and I had my phone on silent so I thought I’d just missed the call.
I hung up right away. This had better not cost me $100June 29th, 2006 at 7:46 am -
hey there,
i am so glad i came accross this blog, thanx so much ^^
i was just wondering though….
if i call the number and i am on prepaid, how would they send me a $100 bill?i dont have a plan on my phone and how would they happen to know my home address? i don’t understand that bit…..July 1st, 2006 at 8:48 pm -
They tried my wife’s phone AND mine again the other night. As our numbers are sequential it may well be sequential number generator.
My wife was holding her phone and still had no time to answer.July 3rd, 2006 at 11:04 am -
I work in a large Federal Government agency. Our work mobiles are not published and I have had two calls from the number 03 8102 9563 - last one being at 5:21 05/07
July 7th, 2006 at 3:04 pm -
I just received one of these calls on the 84042213 number. I logged a complaint to the ACCC and ACMA (spam). I encourage others to do likewise. I’m also pondering whether this qualifies as harassment? I’m sure if an individual was prank calling thousands of people that it would not be considered acceptable behaviour…
July 10th, 2006 at 10:52 pm -
I received a miss call today too from 03 81029563, when i called back it went to the voice mail advising me i have won $40 price. Sound wired! why would anyone give me $40 price for nothing! They asked me to call 1900 968 946 and claim my price. I google and came across this page. Thanks for the info
July 20th, 2006 at 10:08 am -
Hmm, positive I’ve had calls from these places but never rang them back. I figured that if it is a business I’m with that wants to get hold of me, they will resort to mail, if necessary.
So, is sequential dialling prohibited by law in Australia?
Who is getting the money from people returning these phone calls? Is it that if you dial a 1900 number or something that the company you are ringing gets some of the money or what? I am a bit confused about who is supposed to be getting the money we are losing - the marketing company or just our phone provider or both.
And could someone please summarise everything we need to know in one place?
Thanks for the info here - I’ve emailed a number of people already and pointed them here and to 4 wise monkeys that was mentioned.
